An amphitheatre under England’s most important Roman archaeological site is to be excavated by archaeologists.
English Heritage hopes to discover its contemporary structure, as in how it looked and its use and the reason why the Romans abandoned it. A Victorian excavation in 1849 unearthed a skeleton in the amphitheatre leading to theories if the site was converted into a cemetery.
The cemetery is located near a Roman era Fort, a key site in tracing history of the Roman Empire in England.
