Tarita Alarcón Rapu, the governor of the famoud Chilean Easter Island has asked the British Museum to return one of its monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapa Nui people.
Although the statue is one of nearly 1.000, each of them is considered to represent an ancestor. For 150 years the Hoa Hakananai’a, one of the most spiritually important has been on display at the museum.
