The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has been awarded a BREEAM-NL In-Use sustainability certificate with a five-star rating, making it the first museum in the world to achieve the highest possible score for the management of an existing building.
The Rijksmuseum has achieved this rating thanks to its exceptionally high scores in the areas of water, energy and waste management.
Reduction
In 2021, the Rijksmuseum will focus on recycling water, reducing energy consumption, reducing the quantity of waste, and increasing sustainability awareness among staff. The museum intends to be operating completely gas-free by 2030.

BREEAM
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a certification method for a sustainable built environment. The method is used in more than 80 countries worldwide.
As of 2009, the organization Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) has made BREEAM suitable for the Netherlands and Dutch legislation and regulations. The abbreviation -NL has been added to BREEAM since then.
BREEAM-NL has four quality marks:
- New Construction and Renovation: for new-build and large-scale renovation projects
- In-Use: for existing buildings
- Demolition and Disassembly: for demolition projects
- Communities: for entire areas
