A panel of independent experts recommended the shortlist after evaluating 6 competing cities as the outcome of a 2-day meeting in Ljubljana.
The Slovenian cities to make it to the list are Ljubljana, Nova Gorica, Piran and Ptuj. Slovenia will be hosting the European Capital of Culture for the second time in 2025, the first time being in 2012 at Maribor. After the formal endorsement of the nominations, the cities will have time till the autumn of 2020 to complete their application before the panel makes the final decision in December 2020 in Ljubljana.
Being nominated the title of European Capital of Culture can result in economic, cultural and social benefits.
