Europa Nostra has launched a substantial appeal to draw attention and oppose the construction of a planned gondola system which is to connect the historical Belgrade Fortress with the other side of the Sava river. The current plans for the one-kilometre long system significantly threaten the authenticity and integrity of the fortress and its surrounding landscape.
The gondola is meant purely as tourist attraction but is to be built into the very walls of the Fortress. The Belgrade Fortress is the main historical site and most visited tourist attraction of Belgrade, Serbia.
Europa Nostra aimed their appeal to the national and regional authorities as well as national and European institutions and sent a high-level delegation to Belgrade to discuss the issues.
Earlier this year, the South East European Heritage Network (SEE) started a campaign with the same intentions.
