Finland’s Paimio Hospital, by famed architect Alvar Aalto has been placed on a preliminary list for admission to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The 1933 building, in the sity with the same name, was originaly built as a sanatorium and received international critical acclaim after completion. It became a general hospital in 1960.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898 – 1976) was a renowned Finnish architect and designer. His influence on modernist architecture is often compared to architects like Le Corbusier or Walter Gropius. His designs show an emphasis on materials, especially wood, simplification and technical experimentation. Typical for his career is a concern for design as a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art.
