The new publication Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe 2020 presents all the routes: from the oldest ones, including the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes and the Hansa, to the most recent ones, including the Iron Curtain Trail and the Liberation Route Europe.
The Cultural Routes programme was launched by the Council of Europe in 1987. The routes are an invitation to travel and to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Europe by bringing people and places together in networks of shared history and heritage. They put into practice the values of the Council of Europe: human rights, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and mutual exchanges across borders. Today, the programme identified 38 routes, divided into 5 themes: history and civilizations, arts and architecture, religious heritage, landscapes and crafts, and industrial and scientific heritage.
