On 17 and 18 September 2020, the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO) and the German Museums Association (German: Deutscher Museumsbund) organised the online conference “Museums and social responsibility: Values revisited”. The conference was hosted by Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Now, the organisers present a publication based on the conference presentations.
The 11 speakers at the conference discussed the following topics:
- Perspectives on the social function of museums
- The political dimensions of educational work in museums
- The social influence and power of museums
The conference marked the beginning of a series of three conferences hosted by the sitting president of the Council of the European Union. The next conferences will be hosted by Portugal and Slovenia during the presidencies in 2021. The aim is to discuss and further develop the branding and opportunities for museums to act as bearers of social responsibility.
