On 17 May 2020, the National Theatre of Albania in Tirana was demolished. Now, ARCH (Alliance for the Restoration of Cultural Heritage) has added the National Theatre to its Wall of Shame.
The Wall of Shame is, as ARCH puts it, “the evil twin of the Hall of Fame”. The project includes the names of those who neglect, endanger or destroy heritage sites around the world.
The National Theatre was demolished despite local and international protests. In March 2020, Europa Nostra selected the heritage building for its List of 7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites in Europe. A few days before the demolition of the National Theatre, Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, called for a constructive dialogue with heritage stakeholders in a tweet.
